skip to main | skip to sidebar using the iphone sdk without interface builder sunday, 5 october 2008 controlling the status bar just a quick post today because i'm very busy. i have seen several people looking to control whether the status bar appears or not and how to rotate the screen. showing/hiding the status bar when showing/hiding the status bar you can either have it animate (slide) off or you have just have it disappear immediately. if you place this call before you create your window and view in the application delegate then [[ uiscreen ] applicationframe ] will return the correct screen size. [[ uiapplication sharedapplication ] setstatusbarhidden : yes animated : no ]; rotating the status bar if you rotate the status bar then your uialert popups will also rotate so that they display in the same orientation as the phone. this will not rotate your entire co-ordinate system though. again you have the option to animate or not to animate the rotation as you see fit. [[ uiapplication sharedapplication ] setstatusbarorientation : uideviceorientationlandscapeleft animated : no ]; you have a choice of six orientations; portrait , portraitupsidedown , landscapeleft , landscaperight , faceup and facedown . i'll not go into details as the names are fairly self-explanatory. to use them just prefix them with uideviceorientation and pass them into the above code. if you re-orientate the status bar in the simulator then the simulator will also rotate so that the status bar remains at the top of the simulator. posted by mjjw on sunday, october 05, 2008 2 comments: saturday, 4 october 2008 getting started without ib believe it or not it is actually possible to code for the iphone without using interface builder (ib). the code to do this is actually much simpler than i suspected before i delved into the iphone sdk. step 1: create a new iphone project in xcode open xcode and create a new project i usually use the "window based application" template as it is simple to remove all of the ib stuff that xcode will add in their for you. step 2: remove all traces of interface builder from the project firstly you will need to delete the mainwindow.xib file that has been created, select it and hit the delete key. when prompted select "also move to trash" next open the info.plist file in the project. locate the setting "main nib file base name" in this project (usually at the bottom), select it and delete it by using the delete key. save this file. step 3: setting up the code now open the main.m file. this file contains the code that will run when you first launch your application. by default it will try to setup your application from the .xib file we have just deleted, it needs to be changed to setup your application manually. find the line which reads: int retval = uiapplicationmain (argc, argv, nil , nil ); and replace the two nil parameters so that it reads: int retval = uiapplicationmain ( argc, argv, @"uiapplication" , @"myiphoneappdelegate" ); obviously you will nee to put the name of your application delegate class where i have put myiphoneappdelegate. by default this will be appdelegate. if you don't know what an application delegate is or what yours is called then you should probably be reading some beginners guides first. finally, you will need to setup the main application window (which was being done for you by the .xib file). open your application delegate.m file and locate the applicationdidfinishlaunching method. at this stage it will probably just contain one line: [window makekeyandvisible ]; - we need to add code to actually create the window. nothing too tricky here - just insert this line above the makekeyandvisible call: // create the main application // window using the iphone screen size window = [[ uiwindow alloc ] initwithframe :[[ uiscreen mainscreen ] bounds ]]; that's it! you now have a working iphone app without using interface builder. posted by mjjw on saturday, october 04, 2008 no comments: home subscribe to: posts (atom) links touch 'em iphone game iphone dev forums touch arcade followers blog archive ▼ 2008 (2) ▼ october (2) controlling the status bar getting started without ib about me mjjw a good egg view my complete profile
